Fluxbox: Mmm.

Filed under: Linux — Adam @ 5:30 pm

As part of my never ending quest to have my GUI interface in my way as little as possible, I have switched to Fluxbox.  It’s lightweight enough, and customizable.  There is no default stupid screensaver (Flux-Screensaver?) like Gnome and KDE have (that I always turn off*), so all I had to do was set up the ~/.fluxbox/startup script to contain the Xscreensaver background option (xscreensaver -no-splash &, where the ampersand runs it in the background continually).

I had to learn a bit about mapping keys how I want them, but that was no problem.  While these make sense to me, they may not to you, but here’s a list of additions I made to ~/.fluxbox/keys:

Mod1 133 :ToggleCmd {ShowDesktop} {DeIconify all originquiet}
Mod1 134 :exec amixer set PCM toggle > /dev/null

78 :exec thunar

135 :RootMenu

Mod4 t :exec xterm
Mod4 b :exec firefox
Mod4 g :exec thunderbird
Mod4 z :exec pan

Mod4 x :ExecCommand xscreensaver-command –lock
Mod4 c :Reconfigure

Note -- Mod1 is Alt, Mod4 and 133 are both the left Windows key, 134 is the right windows key, 78 is Scroll Lock (it has a purpose now!), and 135 is the Menu key. These are all in addition to the default shortcut keys.  I'm sure I'll change them around a bit until they're perfect, but for now they work and make sense enough to me that I can remember them.

* I freaking hate the dumbing down of options Gnome- and KDE-Screensaver have engaged in.

Weasel words

All of my classes this semester are bullshit electives to get twelve hours to graduate.  I finished my major and my minor early by busting ass.  I already have enough hours to graduate but my school requires me have the right number with them.  So in one of the classes we have to summarize a chapter or two out of this book.  Get a load of this quote:

According to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, more than 1100 women are deliberately killed each year for “violating cultural traditions.

Deliberately killed.  The word you culturally sensitive pussies are looking for is:  murdered.

Khaaaaaaaaaaaaaan

Well, now that sucks.  Ricardo Montalban died at the age of 88.   He was, as Ravenwood says,  the best Trek villain. Possibly one of the best movie-sci-fi villains of all time.

I’m pretty biased, though — I think The Wrath of Khan is the best Trek movie of the lot.  But it wouldn’t have been the same without Montalban’s Khan.  The way he spoke every word, the hate in his eyes directed Kirk’s way, and the perfect delivery of “From hell’s heart…”.

Assholeville

Filed under: Peeves, whiskeytangofoxtrot — Adam @ 10:12 pm

There’s this place, called Assholeville, and I’d like to tell you about a few of it’s features.

One, it’s hard to shop in Assholeville, because the residents block aisles with their carts and talk to people.  You see, the entire world revolves around each resident of Assholeville.  If you try to get around them, you are rude for interrupting their important conversation.

Also, it is impossible to get a speeding ticket in Assholeville.  This is because the assholes all drive in the left hand lane, under the speed limit.  You see, that’s not the fast lane.  It’s the Asshole Lane.

Assholes also don’t understand space between their front bumper and your rear bumper.  They believe that space is a violation of the Charter of Assholeville.  Specifically the part where your life is important.  They don’t understand three- or four-way stop signs, either.  Typically, Assholes believe they go first, regardless of the actual laws regarding assholes.

Another fact about Assholeville you may want to know — it doesn’t have an actual physical location.  Anywhere with two or more assholes gathered in a ten mile radius, or one of the elite class of assholes, is technically Assholeville.
