So, one of my favorite bits from V/H/S got a spin-off movie. It’s not quite a witch but it’s kind of close and in a similar vein to the general direction, so this week’s movie is Siren.
I enjoyed the V/H/S trilogy, and feel like they could do more and visit some of the monsters more fully — there’s a lot of good nuggets there for expansion and spin-offs. That said, if you ranked the movies including Siren, Siren would be tied for third (out of four) or fourth. It’s not particularly bad, but a lot of the characters are more easy to hate than the monster, and they kind of give the demon too much of a tragic story.
They did introduce a ton of interesting side characters and potential areas for exploration in sequels. But this movie just wasn’t scary, and I wasn’t invested in the characters. This might end up be a running theme this quarter if the movies bear out the same sort of story line.
It’s not the worst movie I’ve seen, by far, I just feel like the most likeable human character shouldn’t be in the movie for less than five minutes. At least they left a lot on the table.

Runtime: An hour and a half.
Acting: Decent and worse.
Effects: Pretty good.
Violence: Quite.
Dead Townsfolk: Five by the monster.
Revenge Kills: Kind-of for most of them.
Gun Use: Nothing unrealistically crazy.
Gore: A decent amount.
Creepy? No.
Monster Type? A siren/succubus.
Monster Ick Factor: No.
Funny? No.
Nudity: The siren in question spends most of the movie fully nude.
Pet Death: No.
Pacing: Decent.
